LORDY, LORDY

There is an Elvis song that goes Lordy,Lordy I feel my temperature rising and it just happened to be playing on my i-pod this morning as I was running. That's exactly how I felt. This is the first I have been out since I left for the cruise and I knew it would be a struggle. I decided not to worry about time and just go for some distance. I also took a water bottle with me which was a pain to carry but a necessity. My total for the day was 3:26.

I Goofed

I screwed up today! I thought my training was at 10 but it really wasn't until 10:30 so I was at the gym too early. I went and did cardio on the bike for 30 minutes. This is something I need to start doing on days I am working out. It wasn't so bad the only problem was I didn't have a headset to listen to the tv.

After the 30 minutes I did weights, working on chest and triceps. Gees, was I tired when Shayla got done with me. But it was a good kinda of tired.

BEARLY HOME

Taken at Taku Glacier Lodge, Juneau, Alaska

This week has seemed to go so slow, it's only Thursday, but I have managed to get two training sessions in with Shayla. That isn't so bad. Usually when I have my reentry from a vacation it takes me a good week to get up to the gym.
We worked on legs, biceps and back. Tomorrow I go again and it will be triceps and chest. I still need to get a run in, maybe tomorrow after I train.

We were having dinner at the Taku Lodge when these cute baby bears came up to lick up the scraps at the grill. It was quite a thrill for all of us there and we quickly left the table to go outside and get a better view and some pictures.

Who Would Have Thought

As I was reading my Princess Patter on the cruise I noticed that they were having a non competitive 5K for the cure. Who would have thought there would be a race on the ship. The ladies all agreed to sign up since it was for a good cause. So on Saturday morning we headed up to deck 15. Tracie was feeling a bit under the weather so she didn't start with us. Debbie, Kate and Cindy on deck a ready to go.
Someone from Princess explaining the rules. We had to go around the track 31 times. Get ready to walk.

Here we come!

When the track is a 1/10th of a mile you have a lot of curves a lot of times.

Brad was keeping track of our laps for us and trying to stay out of the wind.

We tried to watch for whales while walking.

Hold on to your hats!

Tracie was able to join us.

Yea! We finished in less than an hour. Now it was time to celebrate and go have breakfast. Who would have thought I would do a race while on a cruise.

Sailing Again

This will be my last blog for a week. We are leaving for a 7 day cruise to Alaska. However before I go I worked out at the gym with Shayla. We worked on chest, back, biceps and triceps. I am planning to take workout clothes with me and use the gym on the ship.

Last night was the last running class. Some of us are signing up for the summer runs but they meet too early ( 5:30 am) for me. I know that I am able to get up and get running in the morning before the heat sets in. I also know that I need to get use to the heat so when I run THE HOTTEST RACE I will be use to the hot temp.

5 WORDS

RELAYS
20 MINUTES
HOT
HUMID
TOUGH
I thought I was going to drop to the ground. It was hot and humid and storms were predicted and we were running relays with a partner. All classes were on the track because no one wanted to be far from the store if it started to rain. It was neat to see the faster groups and to realize that some of them aren't much faster than me. If I keep up my running I just might be able to catch some.

CELEBRATE !

You don't need to fire off any cannons but today I have done two things . One will make some people happy, I mailed in my form for the Hottest Half and 10K. No I am not doing the half but some crazy people convinced me that it would be great fun to run a 10 K in August in Texas and I was stupid enough to believe them. Usually August is the hottest month therefore the race, temps can get into the 100's.

The second thing that happened today was I won $ 250 in a drawing on line. I found out when I got home from working out at the gym. So it has been a good day to celebrate.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

To my daughters on mothers day. Thank you for all the joy you have given me.
Love, Mom

RACE REPORT

Saturday race and the weather was not cooperating. It was warm and humid. Christy and I were to meet Maggie near the bandstand at Parker's Square. We arrived around 7:30 thinking the race was to start at 8 and we wouldn't have long to wait, but it didn't start until 8:30. Oh well it did give us time to get our chips and warm up a little.Maggie and I are ready to go. We both want to improve our time from the Wonder Girl race we did a few weeks ago. We found a place in line not near the front but not far back. Off we went, I could see Maggie and sometimes could catch up with her than she would get ahead again. Christy was behind me but where I didn't know. Just after the 1 mile there was a water station. I was never so glad to see them and the red cups. I didn't even mind spilling it on me as I tried to drink and run.One thing I forgot about this course is that there are hills, oops I told Maggie it was a flat course. I made it to mile two and then the course turned into a shaded park area. When I saw the mile three marker I decided to give it my all to the finish. I went as fast as I could. Maggie was at the finish with a cold bottle of water.
Christy was about 3 minutes behind me and I think she was happy to see the finish line. We had water for her and lots of cheers.

With the race finished we cooled down and waited to hear the times. I took first place in my age group with a time of 40:33. YEA! that is 1:68 less than the last race. It was a nice race and fun to run with family and friends.

Miles for the week: 9 ( this is a guesstimate)

SHIRT NIGHT

This has been a crazy week. I thought I had an ear infection so went to the doctor on Monday only to find out I had the start of strep. I have been taking antibiotics and ibuprofen to help with the pain.

Tuesday night I went to running class but did my own thing. There was no way I could have done 5:1 splits with them.

Wednesday I was suppose to train but cancelled because I was still having a lot of ear pain. Although it didn't stop me from doing coffee with my friend and shopping for new shoes. I bought a cute pair of Merrell Mary Jane sport shoes in a beige color. I love them !

Thursday I was feeling better, but when it rolled around to class time I was thinking of not going. I guess being off training for the week had made me a tad lazy. But then I thought of Amy's friend and other people who couldn't get out and decided that I should go. Surprise it was shirt night. This time a bright red Brooks tech shirt. My run was better than Tuesday night but I still wasn't able to keep up with the group. I am glad that I went, sometimes it helps just to be out with others. I think it motivates me more to run.

Tomorrow morning at 8 I am doing the Faith Run with my daughter and Maggie. Will let you know how we do. I am hoping to shave some time off my last 5 K.

SUNDAY RUN

Christy walked in the house just at the right moment. I was getting ready to go for a run and asked her if she wanted to come along. First question was " how far are you going." I didn't know, "we'll just go to Kids Kastle." I thought that sounded reasonable. Surprise, she agreed to go. Since I was going to have someone with me I opted to take the camera and get some pictures of the trail. This is such a pretty time of year for the flowers. Someone had a beautiful flower garden along side their house.
Of course if you know this hill you know we went farther than Kids Kastle.

I had time to rest by the City Trail sign and was careful not to step in any flowers.

Lots of bright yellow flowers along the trail.
These roses were by the tennis courts. Watch out for bees!

And you can't leave out the primroses, they have reached their peak but still look pretty.
Total miles we walked/ran were 4:38. Not one of my fastest runs but I did enjoy it. Sometimes you have to just slow down and take time to smell the flowers or as in my case take time to photograph the flowers.
Total miles this week 8:88

PICKUPS

I have heard about pickups but I have never done them until last night. It was running class and it was decided ( I don't think I voted) we would try running for three minutes slow and then 30 second (felt like a minute) pickups. I tried but felt it was like when you ride a roller coaster, you go slow up the hill and then WHOOSH, pick it up. Maybe it was the humidity or maybe it was just me but I was having a very hard time keeping up with everyone. I think I did more walking then running. I guess I would be like a Kiddie coaster, shorter ride and less speed.

This morning it was up to the gym. I felt good and we worked on upper body. I think she raised the weight on the bicep curl to 30 lbs, I don't remember it being that heavy and she likes to increase the weights and surprise me.
