IT'S OVER

The holiday has come and gone and I am tired. I have only done one yoga class since Christmas. Everyone else has been going to boot camp or out running zillions of miles ( even in the rain). I have eaten far too many sweets and washed them down with too much wine. But I wouldn't trade my memories for anything. It was a great holiday.

Friday we are planning to do a 5K in Ft. Worth and then come home to celebrate the New Year. Also I have boot camp on Friday, if I choose to go.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

So today was the last chance work out before Christmas. We were in for quite a surprise. The Twelve Days of Christmas carol, we had to do it like you sing it repeating each day until finally we all were ready to drop but finished. Where does she come up with these work outs? This was a good one, and we all left the gym sweaty but happy.

I'LL TRY

Boot camp today, thought it would be easy... it wasn't. We were doing burpees and planks and push ups. Can't wait to take Amy on Friday.
We had to weigh in today and on Monday we reweigh to see if we've gained over the holiday. We are allowed to be 1 pound over. I don't know if I'll make it but sure will try. At least knowwing that I will be weighed on Monday may help me to leave the cookies alone. LOL

WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS

The gifts are wrapped, the baking done and now I have time to enjoy the holiday and wait for everyone to arrive. This also means I had time to take advantage of this beautiful day with a temperature going to 79 to get out and run. My gosh, how long has it been? It was just perfect being out, I wasn't even going to complain about how hot I was. I ran into Christy on the trails and she joined me.

I KNEW

I knew I should have had Christy take my place at boot camp today. It was hard, very hard. We were doing mountain climbers into push ups, shoulder presses and lunges , squats with weights , plank and the very last thing was 100 sit ups. Take your time she said. Remember to breathe, don't grab your knees. This was hard for everyone but we all did it!

NEED TO RUN

Last night just as we were getting ready to leave for dinner we had a leak in the ceiling. Just what i need when i have 9 people arriving next week for Christmas. We called a plumber and he gave us some advice, said to read the meter and if it wasn't going around it was not a water pipe leaking it was probably a leak while the bath was running and had soaked the insulation which was now dripping. Well it was a pipe and my husband turned off the main valve after I went to bed. I need to run.
This morning at 3 am I woke and my husband said, we have no water. After that I couldn't sleep so got up. I need to run.
I'm sitting here thinking about all there is to do before Wednesday, I need to run.
As soon as it's light out I'd love to run but then no water for a shower. May have to go to the gym, they have showers and running water.

SIGN FOR KITCHEN

This is the time of year we should have this sign posted in the kitchen, with all the holiday baking going on there is a fat chance that we'll be putting on some pounds. I just got my wake up call at boot camp today which was fitness day. I was up on the scale more than I wanted.
The work out today also seemed harder than usual, was it because of a few extra pounds.

I WON

Just got the phone call from Shayla, I WON ! I am so excited. Christy had to wake me up to tell me the good news.

CELEBRATE

Woo Hoo ! The contest is over this week and they will be selecting the winner for the goal contest. I'm hoping they will pull my name. I have completed every challenge we were given and this week I had to do my 25 push ups and run a 10 minute mile. That one was bothering me, I didn't think I could do it but Jenny said to suck it up and just run. I chose to do it outside in 38 degree temperatures only because I have trouble running on the treadmill. Did my mile in 9:58 minutes!

Boot camp was inside with a lot of leg work.

I also made my goal of running 600 miles this year.

RUNNING IN THE DARK

Friday night Jenny, Christy and I were signed up to run a night time race in Denton. The race started at a park and then into a neighborhood and back into the park for the finish. This was a 4.2 mile race.
We had time for a race picture before we lined up. Jenny was towards the front and Christy and I were about half way back. The first part of the race had us loop around a lake and there was one place that it was very dark. Once we left the park we were in a neighborhood where a lot of the houses were decorated with lights for Christmas. It made it seem really festive. However there were several places where there was no lights and one was a long hill down. I always worry that I might trip so slow down.

Jenny was the first to come in with a time of 33:23

I was checking my watch for the time and finished with a 57:33

Christy brought up the pack with a time of 58:xx

The medals were like the shirt logo. You could almost hang this on the Christmas tree.

My time got me first place in my age group

Jenny placed second in her age group
After the race we were all hungry so headed to a restaurant for a late dinner.

NOTE TO SELF

I survived the Women's Half Marathon and...

the Turkey Trot last week but two days of boot camp has brought me to my knees. I guess it's because even though I was running I hadn't done any weights for 2 weeks.

Mondays camp was out side because the weather was still warm so we did sprints and lunges and squats and Indians.

Today was inside because the temperature was only 38 degrees when I left for camp. We did lunges, box jumps, squats, leg press and a few other killer things. My legs feel like noodles.

I guess I need to make a note to myself. Don't skip weight workouts when on vacation.

WOMEN'S HALF MARATHON RACE

Saturday morning we drove down to St. Pete's to meet Patty and Jay at the Vinoy. This was her second half marathon to do and we were all excited for her.

We lined up to get our bibs and the goodie bag.

Now we are ready to do some shopping at the Expo.

We stopped at Skirt Sports to look at the Kendall Kollection by Jackie McFee. Proceeds from this collection benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We liked the tanks and decided to get matching ones for the race.

Jackie was there and was nice enough to stop what she was doing for a picture with us. If you're interested you can go to her site http://www.jackiemcfee.com/ to see her products.

Sunday morning we were up early and ready to race. The hotel was near the start line so we didn't have far to walk. We had time for a group picture and then Amy and Jenny went for a warm up run.

The sun is just coming up and we get a picture with our support team.

Jay has Patty do some stretches to warm up.

We found corral 6 and waited for the start, seemed like it took forever.

Soon we were on our way. Jenny started in corral 1 and Amy in corral 2. I was hoping I'd see them on the course.

We are heading for the Pier and spotted our support team. We lost some time at mile 3 when we had an 8 minute wait for the Porto potties.

We made it past the half way mark. Both of us were doing good, no aches or pains.

Seemed like it took forever to get into the stadium. Patty kept asking when we'd get there and I said just take it one step at a time. We even sucked it up and ran part way around.

Once out of the stadium it was all down hill to the finish. We were feeling strong and enjoying the moment.
We did it !!! I was so glad that I was able to do this with my sister for her 70th birthday celebration. That night we went to the Colombian Restaurant on the Pier to celebrate some more.

LET'S GO

It's time to bring out the suitcase, tomorrow we leave with 4 days until the race. Whenever we bring out the suitcases the dogs know something is up. I think Coco would really like to go with but she doesn't get along with her Florida cousin, they both want to be the Alpha dog.
Monday I had boot camp and it was an upper body workout. Heidi and I were both huffing and puffing, man she works us hard. I'll miss the week off but it's nice to have a break.

LAST LONG RUN

This time next Sunday I'll be finished with the half marathon and you will find me sitting on the beach with an ice cold drink in my hand. Sounds heavenly doesn't it?

This morning I had my last long run, 8.88 miles. It was cold when I started but as I've learned I quickly warm up. The run went well, shoes were fine and I used two GU's.

IT'S RAINING IT'S POURING

So the only one happy with today's weather would be a duck. It is just pouring out side and is suppose to rain all afternoon with a drop in the temperature. Luckily we were able to have boot camp out side before the rain started. We did sprints carrying weights, sit ups, lunges and planks. After three sets of these we headed in side for some leg work, box jumps, squats and bike.
Tomorrow is a local 5K that a lot of the girls are doing. I haven't signed up because I wasn't sure what the weather would be like this time of year. If I get up tomorrow and it's not too cold or wet and I feel like running I'll go and race.

ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM

Well we did it, we bought the car. My husband wanted red and I didn't care what color it was. We'll be driving it to Florida next week.
Monday I took in my cake samples( to get another entry into the contest) to boot camp. Felt funny taking cake to a gym. We did a mix of upper and lower body exercises.
Tuesday was car buying, you know how tiring that can be. That evening we went out for dinner to celebrate. Last car we bought was 6 years ago.
Wednesday I had coffee with my friend then took her home and stopped at the running store. I only wanted some GU"s for the race but came home with a new pair of shoes. I got the Brooks Ghost.
This morning I went for a 4 mile run, wore my new running skirt by Race Ready. I wanted to make sure it would be comfortable for the race, and it was.
The sun has just popped out and it is suppose to be another warm day, perfect for giving the dogs a bath.
Can't believe I leave a week from today.

12 MILES, MUSSELS AND TEXAS SHEET CAKE

This morning I had 12 miles to do. I wasn't real excited about it but it helped knowing Amy also had 12 on her schedule. With the time change it was light earlier but the temperature was in the low 40's so I was waiting for it to get a bit warmer. Finally at 9:30 I headed out, ran past the police station to the end of the trail and then back. I was getting warm so went inside to the restrooms and switched my shirt from the keep warm side to the keep cool side. Yes it really works. I followed the trails then headed for the streets and then back on trails. There was some wind which made it harder to run but kept going. When I got near my street I was close to the 12 so ran until the Garmin hit 12. YES, it's done.

My library books are due this week so I thought I'd give you one more food from the book by Janet Wright The Top 100 Health Tips, this one is for my grandson Felix since he loves them, it's mussels. Because they contain both selenium and omega-3 fatty acids they are a super food. They prevent against cancer, heart disease and cell damage and improve brain function. Maybe that's why Felix is so smart. Personally, I don't care for them.

My goal for the week was to take the unhealthy recipe I turned in a few weeks ago and make it healthy and also bring a sample to Shayla. My recipe was the Texas sheet cake, now this I like. I replaced one cup of flour with whole wheat flour, added less butter and used low fat butter milk for the cake and skim milk for the icing. I also cut the icing recipe in half even though it is really so good that you just don't need all that on the cake.

Tomorrow is boot camp and then we go car shopping again.

FALL BACK

Did you remember to set your clocks back? It doesn't really matter, I'm still up early. The only nice thing is it will be lighter earlier, bad thing darker earlier.
Yesterday Allie had a soccer game and my husband was helping out as one of the coaches so we had to get there on time. This left me with about 45 minutes until the game. I wore my running clothes and had decided that if it wasn't too cold and windy I would go out on the trails. The weather cooperated and I found this trail that went around a small lake so I ran around the lake about four times. Finished with 3 miles on my Garmin.
The run seemed to go quite well, my leg was not bothering me and the temperature turned out to be perfect.
Today there are 12 miles on my schedule, hope I can do it.

WHERE'S THE WEEK GONE ?

I don't know about ewe, but the week has really slipped past and I had to stop and think about what I did.
Monday was boot camp
Tuesday, I went for a run but cut it short because it looked like the sky was going to open up and pour down rain. Also was cold and windy.
Wednesday, met my friend for coffee and then took her home. Rushed home to eat lunch and then had a hair appointment, afterwards dinner out.
Thursday had a dentist appointment in Dallas and then home for lunch and then car shopping all afternoon.
We found three we liked so now have to see where the best deal is.
Friday boot camp, upper body workout, my arms are tired. Catching up on laundry and other chores.
My leg is feeling better, I must have needed the rest. Race is getting closer I hope I'm trained enough. I am getting excited about it. Talked with my sister and she also has been training hard. Our youngest sister is not going to do the race because of an injury but she isn't even going to come and cheer us on. I guess we know where we stand with her. LOL Hope everyone has a great weekend.

HELLO NOVEMBER

We were just remarking at boot camp this morning that we can't believe it's November already. Where has the time gone.
Today there were four of us and Shayla had us on the treadmills doing sprints and also some incline runs. This was hard, maybe because I hate the treadmill or maybe because I didn't think I could run that fast, but did. The sweat was dripping and I was tired when finished.
I did 7mph for 1 minute, 5 times with slow walk in between.
Leg is feeling a wee bit better today maybe taking a few days off has helped.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Took a very short run today. I'm having problems with my left leg, don't know if it's the new shoes or too much working out. My race is in 3 weeks so want to be in good shape. I've decided to cut back one day on my boot camp until after the race. I'm getting spooked about injuring myself.

9 MILES, FRIDGE RAID AND PUMPKIN SEEDS

Yesterday the first thing on my agenda was to get my long run in that I missed on Sunday. I was suppose to do eleven miles so headed out on the trails and then the streets. I wasn't sure how far 11 miles was ( a lot farther than I thought) but figured if I went a certain way I would come pretty close to the 11. I was wrong, I finished with 9.50 miles. Guess I'll have to do better next time.
I was really tired when I got home but had to shower and get ready for Shayla to come and do a fridge and pantry raid. I'm in her goal contest to win $500. and the goal this week was to rid your pantry and fridge of anything that isn't clean eating. If you did the challenge you got 5 entries into the drawing. She arrived with a trash bag in her hand and quickly got to work. Frosted Flakes were the first to go then the Cascadian chocolate cereal followed by some granola bars. I talked her into leaving the Sun Chips because they were Allie's and I don't eat chips. Once the pantry was finished she head for the fridge, that was good except she almost threw away my husband's unhealthy salad dressing which I don't use. Finally the freezer, oh boy, mystery meat, and fudge pops found there way into the trash bag along with a half used bag of sweet potato fries.
This is the week we will be carving pumpkins and they are full of healthy pumpkin seeds. According to The Top 100 Health Tips by Janet Wright pumpkin seeds are one of the richest sources of phytosterols, which reduce the risk of arteries becoming narrowed by cholesterol. They also contain vitamin K, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc, omega 3 oils and protein.
I'm going to roast my pumpkin seeds in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil and then use them as a snack or sprinkle them on my salads.

COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES

This morning was boot camp with Heidi and J.C., we were inside doing a Tabata workout. It always amazes me how long 20 seconds seems when you are being timed. This was a good work out and I really felt it in my legs. We did squats with overhead press, push ups, wattle squats
, bicycles, and plank.
After boot camp I had to hurry home, get showered and head into Dallas for a mammogram. It's only been 4 years since I had one, shame on me. The test was being done at the Baylor medical center. I got there with about 15 minutes to spare before my appointment so had time to stop in the ladies room. Now this really surprised me, I opened the stall door and there on the wall was a small plaque saying " MAXIMUM WEIGHT LIMIT 300 LBS". I couldn't believe my eyes, I didn't know there was a weight limit for toilets. And what if you're over the limit and really have to go?

INTERESTING BOOK

I was at the library this week and found this interesting book by Janet Wright in the health section. It lists a 100 food, drinks, herbs and spices that have an impact on your health. There are six chapters that cover health improvers, detoxifiers and digestion, fitness enhancers, weight shifters, brain boosters and mood, and life lengthers. Each page features a food and gives the list of nutrients in that food along with the benefits of the food and a recipe to use.

For example pineapple contains vitamins B1, B6. C, copper, manganese and fiber. It also contains the enzyme bromelain which is an anti-inflammatory. Pineapple can help heal bruises and inflammation. It is also good for sore throats.
The recipe they give is for a pineapple salsa to be served with meat or fish
I have an 11 mile run tomorrow and may just go buy some pineapple to have when I get done to help with the muscle aches I'm sure I'll have.

EMPTY PANTRY

Yesterday I had hills on my schedule. I was to jog for 15 minutes and then run 2 minutes uphill at a hard effort; jog back down and repeat for 3 more times and finish with a 15 minute jog. I never realized how hard hill repeats were, ouch! My legs were so tired all day and still were sore in the morning.
This morning I was debating whether to go to boot camp, the legs were tired and I felt exhausted. I got ready and went, my mile warm up was slow but helped to loosen things up. Lucky for us we were inside using weights, doing push ups and the plank. Felt great when I was finished.
This afternoon I cleaned out my pantry, our goal for the week. We have to get rid of anything that doesn't qualify as clean eating. Let me tell you I had a trash bag full. Good by junk food. You should see all the room I have in my pantry now.

IT'S IN THE CARDS

Beautiful day for boot camp. We were outside playing poker again only this time she switched up some of the exercises. Today it was burpees, push ups, sprints, wiggles, Indians and squats. After five exercises we were given a 30 second rest.

Today is my oldest birthday so a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Amy.

MORE THAN 4

We're putting out our Halloween decorations today. I've noticed on my runs that lots of people have decorated this year. I had to search for the rabbits mask, couldn't remember where I had stored it.
This morning when I got up I was so sroe from yesterdays boot camp that I was really thinking of skipping my run. I remembered that sometimes when you'e sore or don't feel so good if you run you actually feel better. I only had 4 miles to do so I got ready and headed out. When I finished I had 5.36 miles on my Garmin more than what I needed to do. And yes I did feel better.

GOOD LUCK

Tomorrow these three ladies are running the Nike Women's Marathon in San Fransisco. They are such an inspiration to me. Always getting their runs in, up early every Sunday. I hope you all have an awesome time. Good Luck.
